I HEAR YOU AND LET ME TELL YOU THIS: YOU ARE NOT ALONE !
When I had my first daughter in South Africa, I was on my own with little support & less money. At the time I was completing the midwifery component of my education & so I knew a fair bit about hospital policy in managing physiological labour & birth. What I lacked was the information & support that would give me my own voice while birthing my daughter.
We ended up in surgery undergoing an emergency C-section with me under general anaesthetic, & looking back, it was a really traumatic start to our journey as mother & child. When we got home from the hospital, difficult family dynamics made settling into my new role as a single mom that much harder… I remember being visited by an independent midwife & her incredible help while my baby & I established feeding was invaluable. I was scared & so unsure how I was going to cope but her guidance was a beacon of light in a dark time & I remember thinking everyone deserves this kind of support. So, I changed my focus from a medically based perspective to a more person-centred approach & that really shifted my career path.
Roll on 9 years & I was birthing my second daughter halfway across the world in York. This time around, things were very different. This time I had found my voice. The birth was not without its own challenges, few births are, but this time I was empowered. I had the support of a local doula & through my journey with her, I met my tribe. These ladies provided me with the post-natal support I had craved so much with my first born, & ignited my passion to advance my learning so that I too could guide & support others through the incredible rollercoaster of a journey we call parenthood.

Matresence: “The process of becoming a mother, coined by Dana Raphael, Ph.D. (1973), is a developmental passage where a woman transitions through pre-conception, pregnancy and birth, surrogacy or adoption, to the postnatal period and beyond. The exact length of matrescence is individual, recurs with each child, and may arguably last a lifetime! The scope of the changes encompass multiple domains –bio-psycho-social-political-spiritual– and can be likened to the developmental push of adolescence.” Aurélie Athan, Ph.D.

BUT DON’T TAKE MY WORD FOR IT…
Looking back now I don’t know how I managed through my first labour without Mel! I definitely could not have done it without her in my second. She was so supportive and helped me to make informed decisions about my birth plan and relay them back to my consultant. She was such a huge help during labour- physically and emotionally. Whilst it didn’t go to plan for me, I ended up with a shorter labour than my first and another healthy baby, which is all I could ask for. (Becky Cole)
Mel is a really experienced and very skilled birth partner, she gave loads of support to both myself and my husband during the labour and birth of our first son. Highly recommended. (Rhianna Hogley)
I truly believe [Mel] played a massive part in helping me have one of the most amazing experiences of my life. It was just incredible and I don’t think that would have been possible without you. Your work is amazing – THANK YOU!! (Chloe Fletcher)
The workshops were comprehensive and covered all the topics I was looking forward to exploring, even about breastfeeding and postnatal care. I would strongly recommend that workshop to all pregnant women. With your help I fully understood what was happening with my body during pregnancy, labor and I was prepared what will happen after. (Maria Zys)
She was fantastic. She was so kind and full of knowledge on how I could achieve the kind of labour that I wanted. It went exactly to plan and not many women can say that. I have no doubt that this was due to Mel’s techniques with me during early labour. She taught me exercises to ensure that the baby’s head was in a good position for a swift, uncomplicated labour. Mel has a very warm personality and is extremely caring. (Jo Richardson)
I cannot recommend Mel highly enough. She enabled us to have the most positive birth after having had a previously traumatic experience. Mel is extremely knowledgeable, experienced and committed. (Angela Holmes)
